Deconstructing a classic: that's the theme of this video by Tom Brislin, of him covering the 1982 Joe Jackson hit. Singer-songwriter-keyboardist Brislin -- a Jersey native now living in Nashville -- shows his hands playing the various parts of the song, on keyboards and vibes, and when he sings harmony with himself, he shows himself singing both parts. The technique makes the propulsive pop song -- always fun to listen to, in any form -- come alive, in a new way.
New Jersey rock fans may recognize Brislin from his days in the local band Spiraling (originally known as You Were Spiraling), though he also has played with many internationally known acts, including Yes, Meat Loaf, OK Go and Marshall Crenshaw.
