Song of the Day: 'Free Again,' Alex Chilton

Published: Friday, March 04, 2011, 3:00 PM

Lots of songs mourn the end of a relationship. But there aren't many that see such a development as something worth celebrating.

One of the few is "Free Again," a country-style ballad from "Lost Decade," a 1985 collection of material that Alex Chilton had recorded, as an artist or producer, in the 1970s. Feel the sense of liberation in his voice as he sings lines like "I'm free again, to do what I want again/Free again, to sing my songs again/Free again, to end my longing/And to be out on my own again." And check out the ecstatic raveup at the end.

Chilton, best known as a member of the bands Big Star and the Box Tops, died at the age of 59, a little less than a year ago (March 17, 2010)..
