Last night on "The Bachelor," Brad Womack took the final three women to South Africa.
It's a shame that ABC wasn't willing to spring for Brad's therapist to join him in South Africa because he made quite a mess of his date with Ashley. I've been rooting for Brad to find love all season (especially after the way America crucified him the first time around), but he kind of disappointed me this week.
You know a date isn't going when when you're making small talk about creamy potatoes and mosquito nets. Brad had gave Ashley with a rigorous line of questioning, causing her to emotionally shut down. (To his credit, however, he did take full responsibility for the awkwardness of the fantasy suite date).
What I found interesting was that Brad talks about expecting the women to "put themselves out there," but he doesn't seem willing to do the same. He faulted Ashley for not mentioning Austin in the places she'd like to live, yet it never occurred to him that he could consider moving if he met the right girl. All season, it's been expected that the girl would have to move to Austin.
I have to wonder if Mr. Womack is a bit threatened by career-driven women.
Brad also seems to expect the women to "confront their fears" but never seems to be willing to do the same. Ashley had to face her fear of helicopters, while he tricked Chantal into eating a worm (which he wasn't willing to eat).
I don't fault Ashley for being realistic (if not a bit cynical). I don't think many women in the real world would be willing to move to another city after six weeks of dating.
And he seemed to fault Ashley for being ambitious and career-driven (qualities that he himself had when he was in his 20s).
In any case, Brad and Ashley are very obviously mismatched, so he did make the right decision. They are in very different places of their lives.
Brad broke protocol several times this episode. He actually did the right thing by pulling Ashley aside to talk to her before letting her go. In a way, he pulled an Ali Fedotowsky by saving her from the humiliation of a rose ceremony rejection.
He also broke protocol on his date with Emily when she confessed her true feelings for him. He broke unspoken "Bachelor" etiquette by telling her that he was falling in love with her. Emily is probably a better match for Brad, though she may be a bit out of his league. Still, he seems to be a better person when he's with her.
Next week, ABC will air the "Women Tell All" special. I'm expecting a few laughs with train wreck Melissa, "manscaper" Raichel, and crazy Michelle.
