'Skins' recap episode 7 : We're STD-compatible

On last night?s ?Skins,? all the group's sex secrets came out thanks to a round of Chlamydia, and Michelle had some tough choices to make. Given her reaction to The Truth About Tony, I have to guess that the girl is either phenomenally oblivious or in some serious denial.

Open on a rave, where Michelle and Tony are still having trouble connecting. They go back to Michelle?s place, and when they wake up, Michelle walks in on her mom kicking another man out before breakfast. ?I hate when they get clingy,? said her mom, claiming she does not rely an any man. A real role model.

Michelle visits the gynecologist (who creepily mixed up her chart with her mom?s, and then accidentally let slip that her mom was having regular tests to check for sexually transmitted diseases), then heads to a meeting at school with the principal. The principal accuses of her of playing stupid to be more popular. It wouldn?t be the first time that?s happened, but still unfortunate.

In the cafeteria with the gang, Michelle gets a phone call from her doctor, who tells her she has Chlamydia. She runs at Tony and starts to attack him, while Abbud and Chris hold her back. As she stalks off, Tony just says, ?She?ll be back.? Oh, Tony ? denial doesn?t look great on you.

Daisy finds Michelle crying in the bathroom, but instead of helping does pretty much the complete opposite when she hints that everyone else knew, and that they all thought Michelle knew and just didn?t mind or care. Sorry, but that?s maybe the stupidest thing anyone has ever said to a crying 17-year-old who just found her boyfriend cheated.

Michelle asks who the girls are, and Daisy lists them off, including Tabitha, the girl from the choir who Michelle had a chick-fight with during Stanley?s episode. Michelle asks if Daisy has slept with him and she says no, so Michelle (naturally) accuses her of wanting to try it anyway. ?Newsflash, Michelle: he?s not all that,? Daisy tells her, which is a good point. Tony has yet to do anything that would make me want to fight for him.

Tony calls to apologize, but it?s a truly terrible apology. Rather than saying he is sorry for cheating or for hurting her, he basically says he is sorry she found out. Nice. Stan tells Tony to ?go say sorry like you actually mean it? and Tony mocks Stan for being in love with Michelle. Stan winds up for a big punch, but completely misses, smashes his face into the bathroom stall door, and winds up giving himself a bloody nose.

At Michelle?s house, her mom tells her Chlamydia is no big deal, that she?ll just take the meds and move on. I love how there has yet to be a single good parent on this show. I mean, I know every teen thinks their parents are clueless. And a lot of them might be. But all the parents on this show are oblivious to the point of negligence. Maybe that?s why all the kids are so messed up? Just saying.

In school the next day, Tony tries again to apologize to Michelle, but instead she chooses that moment to announce to everyone that Tony has STDs. He calls her ?Nips,? a nickname he knows she hates, and she stalks over and informs that he is never allowed to call her that again. As she goes to leave, she knocks over Tea?s bag, and everyone sees that Tea is taking the same anti-STD medication. Michelle realizes that it?s Tea who Tony has been sleeping with, and makes it clear that she does not really want to speak to anyone.

Back at home, Michelle reflecting on how she and Stanley used to be best friends. Really? Then how come that has never come up before in one of the 500,000 other times Stan was mooning over Michelle? Weak sauce, writers. Anyway, she obviously decides that this would be the best time ever to go relieve Stan of his virginity.

She shows up at his house, strips, and just goes for it. She has even thoughtfully brought along a condom, so as not to pass along her STD. It doesn?t quite work out; as soon as she gets her hand down his pants, he gets a little too?overexcited, and it?s over before it even got started. Lying on his bed, Stan and Michelle admit they miss their old friendship, and call each other their old private nicknames of ?Stanny? and ?Fanny? (because she once flashed him her behind).

Tea is waiting for Michelle at home and tries to apologize. Michelle says it?s worse because Tea is not even romantically interested in men, so she must have wanted something else. As the tears stream down, Michelle tells Tea it?s the first time she?s seen her cry and slams the door in her face. I have to say, I don?t always like Tea, as a character, but Sofia Black-D?Elia might be one of the more gifted actresses on the show. I thought she did a really nice job in the last episode with Abbud, and again in this one.

Anyway, Michelle destroys a bunch of photos, then calls Tony and tells him she?s ready to talk. He comes over and they go have a drink in her kitchen. ?You and I are good together, you know that?? Tony tells her. She says she doesn?t love him, but he tells her he doesn?t believe that. They start making out and end up in her bed. After having sex, she kicks him out and tells him she never wants to see him again.

?So what was this?? Tony asks her. Michelle tells him it?s because they are ?STD-compatible.? And?BURN. He reiterates that she loves him, and she says no ? that he loves her, and that she is too good for him. Bye, Tony.

Michelle meets up with Betty, Tea?s lesbian buddy/occasional hook-up, at the Chinatown bus to Boston (seriously I have no idea where they live, though), and it looks they are going to make a run for it.

So I will just say that I had mixed feelings here. Definitely glad Michelle ditched Tony ? maybe that was some evidence of those smarts the principal was talking about. I just don?t understand Tony at all, though. He has not seemed in love with her at all on the show ? it?s like he likes the idea of having a hot girlfriend he can have sex with whenever he wants, but confronted with the reality of maintaining an actual relationship seems pretty much beyond him.

I don?t believe that Tony regrets his actions. And I do believe that Michelle knew something was going on ? she really went at Tabitha, after all ? but she didn?t want it to be true, so she ignored it. It sucks that none of her friends told her. But it?s also her fault for willfully remaining behind those blinders.

I am not sure if this show is going to go the British route with Tony?s storyline. If so, there?s a long way to go before we care about him enough to give that saga the emotional heft it requires.
