Touches of color and unexpected accessories accent fall 2011 collections debuted at New York Fashion Week

Metallic blue and a palette of orange-red shades were in the spotlight at New York Fashion Week, which concluded Friday.

These brights added spark to designers' fall 2011 collections, which otherwise were stuck in neutrals. Monochromatic black, charcoal gray and camel beige outfits that relied on texture and shine for interest were another staple of the season.

"Metallic blue is going to be a great year-round color," said Jenny Fleiss, the co-founder of Rent the Runway, the New York-based fashion rental website.

The favored silhouette was narrow and tight on top, and more voluminous on the bottom -- longer skirts and full-legged trousers will be de rigueur in fall.

Other wardrobe winners? Lots of thin belts, often worn over a coat or a jacket. Blouses got romanced with puffed sleeves and embroidery. Fur trim was ubiquitous, as was leather, used for skirts, pants, coats and blouses.

And clearly this winter put the fear of freezing into New Yorks' designers -- heavy coats and parkas were everywhere, often over pretty little dresses.

And for the bold? Some outfits that featured a mix of plaids and other patterns.

Standout collections included those from Rebecca Minkoff, who offered an "urban gypsy"-inspired collection for the bohemian girl. The line offered mixed patterns and plaids, with leather and fur trim accessories.

Instead of teenage models, designer Adrienne Vittadini showed her collection of knits and dresses on supermodels of yesteryear, including Frederique van der Wal, Carmen Dell'Orefice (looking just smashing at almost 80), Irina Pantaeva and Pat Cleveland.

Douglas Hannant showed his collection off-site from Lincoln Center (where most of Fashion Week was staged), in the Terrace Room at the Plaza Hotel. The models, sporting short hairstyles accented with glitter or feathered hats, showed a mostly black and neutral collection, fancied up with fur and splashes of bold colors such as peacock blue.
