Your comments: Boston Symphony Orcestra at NJPAC

The Boston Symphony Orchestra came to Newark to perform at the NJPAC, but without music director James Levine who is stepping down in September. In his place was conductor Roberto Abbado, who guided the orchestra through the performance.

The reviewer of the show felt Abbado was a little flat, but NJ.com user Darrell enjoyed the show:

Perhaps it was because we were seated in the third tier, but my wife and I enjoyed the musicality of the performances. From our seats, the dynamic contrasts were very effective. For me, it's very hard to mess-up a Haydn symphony. This was no exception. This performance had just the right buoncy and humor. The written bassoon blat in the second movement always brings a smile to my face. I also enjoyed the slight hesitation leading into phrases in the third movement. Something, nonmusical, annoying and apparent throughout the concert was the hacking coughs heard, especially in the quiet movements. This was especially noticeable during the Bartok's ethereal second movement. Another annoyance was the sight of Governor Christie, in a first tier box, using his blackberry during the concert. He should have one of his people monitor it for him during such occasions and fetch him in an emergency.

I would have preferred to have seen/heard the original program, which I purchased tickets for, with Levine conducting. However, this was not a bad concert.

Were you at the show? If so, did you enjoy it? Check out the original entry and add your comments.
